8 Feb 2012 at 7:00pm Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures In a world where digital and physical are often combined into one blurred reality, where the craftsman or the artist is something entirely different to what he or she once was, you never quite know how something was put together. For the fashion world that means the use, or often the overuse, of photoshop; it means choice between shooting photos digitally or on film, or sometimes tricking the eye into thinking something that’s digital was shot on film; it means digital effects and backdrops that were never really there. Not that those are necessarily bad things – technology too can create great art. Seeing these behind the scenes shots from Rolf A. Jensen’s shoot Claustrophobic Fashion gives some insight into how such a creative piece was put together. In it we see illustrator Aldous Massie at work – confirming that there’s no digital trickery here. The drawings were manually and artfully created on top of the sets. Article continues. The latest collection from her label, Ghost & Lola, is an eclectic yet ultimately feminine mix of such motifs as soaring birds and blooming flowers. Modelling these limited edition pieces for the collection’s look book is Robyn Lawley, styled with the kind of soft, bouncy waves and flicked-out eyeliner that are the perfect on-trend accompaniments to the feminine accessories. Dreams are fragmented, they have no logical sequence and no sense of time. But they can evoke something; they can leave a mood as a lasting impression that inspires you for the rest of the day. It was a dream that photographer Fenia Labropoulou had that inspired the concept of this shoot, titled, quite aptly, Dreamcatcher. Article continues. But there it is, a video of Emmanuelle Alt miming to Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. Telling you to Go-Go to the new Vogue-Vogue. That being the guise of a purpose, there does seem to be a deeper mission to Alt’s ’80s popstar fantasy. This video wants us to know that Alt is cool in a dorky, approachable kind of way. It wants us to know that she has a personality, albeit it one vastly different to that of her predecessor Carine Roitfeld. It implores us to believe that – look! – she can have fun too.

But the best supporting cast members are surely Gucci’s Art Deco dresses, making their way into almost every shot. The great thing about Patrick Demarchelier’s editorial is that it shows just how versatile these shining deco dresses are. All it takes to transform them is a little bit of magic with styling, hair and makeup. A micro fringed pixie crop and thick lashes places the Outstanding M.C.B somewhere between Liza Minnelli and Twiggy. A sleek shoulder-length bob keeps it classically ’40s. Full bouffant hair and winged out liner, on the other hand, is decidedly 1960s. Article continues. Fashionising.com captured this alternative view at Amsterdam fashion week (AIFW).

Dragon slayer. White witch. Human butterfly. Kristen McMenamy has just the right look – etherial but not too soft, timeless and ageless – to play them all. Kristen’s beauty is in the fact that she doesn’t have to look beautiful. In one of Tim Walker’s shots for this Love Magazine editorial she cries and smokes with equal conviction. In others her silvery-blonde elfin hair is replaced with a bowl-like short fringe sitting starkly atop near invisible blonde eyebrows. There’s no clear narrative to the shoot, titled The Origin of Monsters, which skips from scene to scene like a dream sequence of twisted fairytales. Between Katie Grand’s styling and Tim Walker’s photography it seems to have been dreamed up from collective imaginations. And isn’t that where all monsters, really, originate from? The Imagination? That’s why we captured all the beauty looks at Obakki’s fall / winter 2012 showing at New York fashion week (NYFW).

So instead of aiming for the avant garde, the girls behind Eau Paix Vie distinguish themselves via simple philosophy. Woven into every bikini is their sense of adventure, lust for travel, belief that life in general – and summer in particular – is about having fun. In the brand’s own words, they’re looking to “invoke the happiness, good feelings and fun that come only from a beautiful summers day at the beach.” Each bikini is made from imported italian fabrics and other fabrics hand sourced around the world. We have one Eau Paix Vie bikini to give away. Read on for details. Article continues. In fact it’s an all-round alignment of stars: the collection, of which the “Jolie Bow” silk picnic dress and its matching headscarf are a definite highlight; the beauty of the fresh-faced Parisian models; and the setting of the antique Theatre Dejazet all come together to create the perfect playground for Von Unwerth’s trademark style. Also stunning. Also from Factice’s tenth issue. Red hair, red lips, both styled by Warda Noufais, turn model Vanessa Jobb into a real-life Jessica Rabbit – especially when a deep, waved side part curtains one eye. Pierre Soubbotnik’s richly saturated photography is perfect for the femme fatale mood. Article continues. There’s plenty of blurring, obscuring, plenty of techniques from Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott that gear towards mood creation. The male models are, for the most part, clothing-less props. The shoot’s main drawcard – one time supermodel Linda Evangelista – is veiled, blurred, smudged with lipstick and left looking a little lost; but what outfits we do see, accessorised by showgirl headpieces that are the true attention-grabbers of the shoot, are well styled by Katie Grand.
